The workshop has brought together some of today's leading researchers in the field of automatic data layout and performance estimation. The number of participants was reduced in an attempt to keep the group manageable and productive. This workshop has been a follow-up to the International Workshop on Automatic Parallelization (AP'93), which was held in Saarbruecken, Germany, in March 1993 and to the International Workshop on Automatic Data Layout and Performance Prediction (AP'95), which was held in Rice Univerisity, Houston (TX), in April 1995. Approximately 20 researchers took part in AP'97.
