SHORT BIO
Dr. Jordi Garcia is a professor in the Department of Computer Architecture at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, BarcelonaTech (UPC). He is currently the academic director of the Center of Cooperation for Development, also at the UPC.
He joined the Department of Computer Architecture (Departament d'Arquitectura de Computadors, DAC) at the UPC in 1991. Jordi Garcia has a master degree in Computer Science (1991) and a PhD degree in Computer Science (1997), both from the UPC. From 2001 to 2004 he was the vice-dean of university extension at the Barcelona School of Informatics (Facultat d'Informàtica de Barcelona, FIB) at the UPC and from 2004 to 2010 he was the vice-dean, head of studies, also at the FIB.
Jordi Garcia lectures courses on operating systems concepts, operating systems internals, operating systems projects, computer fundamentals, the sustainability of the technology, and technology for development. He is also consultant at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, and has been collaborating for several years with some master courses on operating systems and network programming at the University of Reading, UK.
His research interests are the massively parellel systems, the optimization techniques for supercomputers, and the optimization of run-time environments. He is also interested in the operating systems internal implementation, as well as the run-time interaction between the operating system (Linux) and the virtual environments (Java Virtual Machine).
He is currently involved in several projects related with the sustainability of the technology. In fact, he is the academic responsible of the sustainablility skill in the Computer Science degree at the Barcelona School of Informatics. Jordi Garcia is also interested in the innovation of education in the computer science field. Actually, he was member of the team that received an award for the educational quality in 2005.
Jordi Garcia is highly committed with the universitary cooperation for development. He is member of the academic board in the Center of Cooperation for Development at the UPC, and is member of the academic committee of the Catalunya-Africa Institute. He is responsible of several cooperation projects in west Africa, where he is the co-funder on an NGO.
