Biography

I graduated in Telecommunications Engineering at Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) in 1991 and got the PhD degree in Telecommunications Engineering at UPC in 1998. I joined the ATM Traffic Management group at the Computer Architecture Departament in 1993. From that year I have participated in several European projects such as EXPLOIT, BAF, EXPERT, NETPERF and MOEBIUS, WIDENS (VI FP) and actually I participate in the EuroNGI (VI FP) project. I now am full time associate (in Spain we call it "Titular de Universidad") at the Computer Architecture Department at UPC. My areas of interest were communications systems and Broadband Networks (my PhD was on ATM traffic control stuff) but in recent years I have moved to TCP/IP stuff (IPv4, IPv6, QoS in IP...), Mobile communications (Mobile IPv4/v6, MANETs, WIFI, WMN,...) and Internet routing (BGP4 and Internet taxonomy). Lastly I have been working in VANETs (Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks). In this area the research group have participated in V-NET-II (2006-07) and V-NET-III (2007-08) Specific Join Research Activity projects inside the Euro-NGI, FGI (Network of Excellence). I am also working in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSN).I have also participated as AIDIT (Agencia de Acreditacion en Investigacion, Desarrollo e Innovacion Tecnologica) evaluator of Spanish National Projects.

Research Activities

My research group,CompNet, is leadered by Prof. Jorge Garcia-Vidal.

Actually, I am researching in:
I am willing to conduct motivated students that may be interested to research in these areas.
Please send me an e-mail with CV and Academic Expedient.

Current PhD Students: Ruken Zilan, Oscar Trullols, Sergio Navarro

Former PhD Students: Dr. Juan Ivan Nieto-Hipolito

Publications

I have participated in the organization of the ITCSS 2001 and EW2004 conferences, 3rd and 4th EuroNGI Workshops on Wireless and Mobility and I have been TPC member in the EW2004.

I have participated as a reviewer (delegated by TPC members of that conferences) of several conferences: PIMRC 2007, 2006 and 2005, European Wireless (EW) 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, Broadband 2006, NGI 2006, ISCC 2005, Networking 2008, 2005, 2002 and 2000, ITCSS 2001, QoFIS 2000 and 2001, Cluster 2000, INFOCOM 98, ITC98, PACT98, Broadband Comm. 98, ECMAST 97, WATM 95.

I have also reviewed papers for Computer Networks, Computer Communications, Journal of Network and Computer Applications, IEEE Trans. Networking.

Past Projects:

PhD courses and Master CANS (Computer Architecture, Networks and Systems)

I have participated giving two PhD courses from 2000 to 2006. At the department we have begun a Master (research oriented) called CANS that substitutes the PhD courses.
I participate in the course (courses 2006-07 and 2007-08):
I have been Master CANS Academic responsible from May 2005 to july 2007 and Doctorate Program responsible of the "Computer Architecture" Department PhD Program from May 2005 to May 2008.

Undergraduated courses

Plan 91

CBXC: Conceptes Basics de Xarxes de Computadors

In this location you can find information about CBXC (sorry this page is in spanish), a course on computer networks given at the Informatic Faculaty (UPC). CBXC is a 3th course subject and the first subject about networks given in this degree. In CBXC students learn about transmission data, LAN technologies (mainly Ethernet) and WAN access. After this course, students may study STD in which they learn about Internet protocols.

STD: Serveis de transport de dades

In this location you can find information about STD (sorry this page is in spanish), a course on TCP/IP given at the Informatic Faculaty (UPC). STD is a 4th course subject and the first subject about TCP/IP given in this degree. Slides (Transparencias de STD grupo 10): A white paper (3com) in pdf about IPv4 addressing that can help students to understand CIDR, subnetting, VLMS

Plan 2004

XC: Xarxes de Computadors

In this location you can find information about XC (sorry this page is in spanish), an obligatori course on computer Networks that substitutes CBXC and STD given at the Informatic Faculaty (UPC). XC is a 4th course subject and the first subject about TCP/IP given in this degree. The course is mainly center in 3 big areas: LANs (Ethernet and IEEE 802.11), IP and TCP protocols.
Some Labs with IOS

PIAM: Protocolos de Internet and Aplicaciones Multimedia
In this location you can find information about PIAM (sorry this page is in spanish), an optative course given at the Informatic Faculaty (UPC). PIAM is a course which intensifies networking concepts. The course is divided in 3 parts: Routing, Mobility and QoS

PIAM slides (Transparencias de la asignatura e informacion adicional)
Zebra page (for RIP, OSPF and BGP routing): quite useful if you want to practice with routing in a CISCO-IOS-like environment
