    Software-Defined Security (SDS)

    This course provides insights into cyber maneuvering or adaptive and intelligent cyber defense. It describes the required models and security supporting functions that enable the analysis of potential threats, detection of attacks, and implementation of countermeasures while expending attacker resources and preserving user experience. The scenario of the course is on 5G and beyond telecom operator networks and services. The first part (Chapters 1-4) provides preliminary foundations of computer networking, Software Defined Networking (SDN), Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), and 5G/6G network architectures, which will help students to understand advanced topics in this course. Before moving forward, several important and highly related terms need to be clearly understood. The second part (Chapters 5-8) provides advanced topics for virtual network security and particularly several important topics are presented, such as Micro segmentation and Moving Target Defense (MTD) and security service function chaining. The third part (Chapters 9-10) extends the course and reviews the latest topics on security from research and industrial initiatives related to 5G and beyond networks and services, including Federation of services based on distributed ledger technologies (DLT) and the security plane. The course also includes a practical component on the lab, in which students have to work in teams to develop an SDN-based security scenario.

    Computers Architecture, Systems, and Networks Optimization (CANO)

    The course is a comprehensive introduction to the theory and algorithms of integer optimization. It is organized in four parts: mathematical programming, heuristic algorithms, network flows, and communication network problems.
    The goals of the course are the following:

  • To present students with a knowledge of the state-of-the art in the theory and practice of communication network applied integer optimization,
  • To provide students with a rigorous analysis of heuristic algorithms,
  • To help each student develop his or her own intuition about ILP modeling and algorithm development and analysis.

    Groups of two may collaborate and hand in a single applied project. Each project consists on define a problem drawn from your own research area, design an ILP model, and design and implement some heuristic algorithms to solve the problem. Students should compare results obtained with both methods.
    The grading for the subject will be determined using the following weights, part assignments: 30%, applied project: 70%.


  • Proyecto de Redes de Computadores y Sistemas Operativos (PXCSO)

    Se trata de una asignatura de proyectos que tiene por objetivo dotar a los alumnos de ingeniería informática de la FIB de un conjunto de competencias tanto técnicas como no técnicas.
    La asignatura está diseñada entorno a la ejecución de un proyecto informático, en el que los alumnos trabajan en grupos de 8. El alcance concreto de cada proyecto es propuesto por el grupo de alumnos y es autorizado por los profesores.
    Cada equipo simula una empresa de consultoría a la que se le encarga el diseño de la red, la configuración de los servidores, la integración de las aplicaciones, etc. La empresa cliente es una "pequeña" empresa, un colegio, un cyber-café, una ONG, una comunidad de vecinos, un hospital, una biblioteca, etc., que se conecta a Internet a través de un proveedor de servicios de Internet (ISP) y que necesita disponer de una red interna separada y protegida.
    Cada uno de los integrantes del equipo de trabajo debe asumir un rol diferente (jefe de proyecto, comercial, ingeniero de sistemas, ingenero de redes, webmaster, ingeniero de seguridad, etc.). Los roles se los reparten los alumnos bajo consenso del grupo.


    Optical Network Net Present Value Optimization

    In this work we use operations research and statistical techniques in order to develop a useful tool in the decision making process of telecommunications companies. Two optical network partitioning schemes are compared, and we are looking to find under which circumstances, a scheme is better than the other. In the same way we need to define the network design, which grants the better benefit, given a few possible locations that represent connection demand places. The comparison between both schemes of partitioning will be done in economic terms using the Net Present Value (NPV). Since the expression of NPV is a not linear function, we give a solution by developing a statistical model that explains the intensity that has to be inserted in a network. Finally the OVALO (Optical network net present VALue Optimization) problem gives as a solution, a network design that maximizes the total benefit in net present value of a long-term investment.
